The fish and the catch
We differentiate between two species, common redfish (Sebastus marinus) and rosefish (Sebastus mentella). Both species are common in Norwegian waters. The redfish is found all along the continental incline at a depth of 330-660 feet, but it has also been caught at 3,000 feet. In the Norwegian Sea and the Arctic Ocean, redfish is pelagic, live in large schools, and mating takes place from August to October.

In the winter, migration begins to spawning grounds off Vesterålen. The biggest redfish catches are made with trawl nets in Northern Norway, particularly in the spring when it is caught along the continental edge north to Bjørnøya.

Secondary catches of redfish occur year-round in vast areas of the Norwegian Economic Zone and the Svalbard Zone.

Nutritional content
The fat content of redfish varies some, but it usually contains about one gramme of Omega 3 fatty acid per 100 g filet. Redfish is also a good source of protein.
